Blackout Curtains for Sliding Glass Doors: A Practical Size Guide

To choose blackout curtains for a sliding glass door, start with the width of the rod or track and the actual hanging height. Door width alone will not tell you how much fabric you need. You also need room for folds, coverage at the edges, and a place for the curtain to sit when the door is open.

Two panels with a combined width of 104 inches and one 100-inch-wide panel may sound almost interchangeable. Their lengths, opening direction, and hanging options can make them very different purchases.

Measure the space the curtain will cover

If you already have a rod or track, measure its usable span. If you are planning a new installation, decide where it will begin and end, including space beyond the glass for coverage and for gathering the fabric to the side. Check for a nearby wall, furniture, and the door handle.

Next, think about daily use. Which side of the door opens? Where will the fabric gather? A curtain that constantly sits across the handle or walkway can be frustrating even when the dimensions look right on paper.

Add enough fabric for the folds you want

A useful starting range is about 1.5 to 2 times the rod or track width in total flat fabric width. Follow the curtain maker's instructions for the particular heading and style. As a reference, IKEA's RITVA sizing guidance uses 1.5 times the rod or track width for a full look and 2 times for an extra-full look; other curtains may call for different fullness.

For an 80-inch rod or track, that starting range would be 120 to 160 inches of flat fabric. A single 100-inch panel provides a ratio of 1.25. It may span the distance, but it will not give the same folds as 160 inches of fabric. This example is a sizing calculation, not a guarantee of fit for a particular door.

Compare the whole package

Here are two examples from our listings. The widths below describe fabric measured flat, before it is gathered into folds.

Listing Panel count Total flat width Length
Cream linen-textured curtain 1 100 inches 84 inches
StangH khaki floral curtains 2 104 inches 96 inches

The StangH listing gives each panel as 52 inches wide. Two panels produce 104 inches in total, not 208. Compared with the single cream panel, the pair provides only four more inches of flat width but twelve more inches of length. Either option still needs to be checked against your installation.

Choose one panel or a pair around the door

One wide panel can gather toward one side. A pair can open from the center or be arranged around your chosen hardware, depending on the system. Picture the curtain both open and closed before you decide.

If you need extra panels, confirm stock and matching specifications before buying the first set. An open-box assortment may have only one available unit, and a similar color name does not guarantee an exact match from another listing.

Check length from the actual attachment point

Measure from where the fabric will hang to where you want its bottom edge to finish. Rings, hooks, rod pockets, and tabs can change that starting point. Use the manufacturer's measurement guidance for the heading you choose.

For a frequently used doorway, plan a length that stays clear of foot traffic and the door's operation. Do not assume an 84-inch curtain will fit simply because the door is roughly that height; the rod may sit above the frame.

Blackout fabric still needs good coverage

A blackout description concerns the fabric or backing. Light may still enter around the sides, above the rod, or through a gap between panels. Check how your installation covers those areas rather than expecting the fabric label alone to determine the result.

The cream listing offers several hanging methods and says hooks and rings are excluded. The StangH listing describes rod-pocket, back-tab, or clip options. Confirm compatibility with your own hardware and read the care instructions for the item you choose.
